The Family Law Unit represents clients in cases involving divorce, child custody and visitation. Services range from telephone advice to negotiation and trial. In 2004, the unit comprised of Managing Attorney Dawn Cook and Director of Training Elizabeth Segovis; staff attorneys Steve Bagian and Denise Aiken; secretaries Virginia DiLibero and Cindy Alderete.
Family stabilization remains the primary goal of the unit. The staff works closely with other units, particularly Domestic Violence and Family Preservation. Often it is necessary to pursue a domestic order so that the Department of Children, Youth and Families will close a case, or to provide long term protection to victims of violence. Working with the Responsible Parent Unit we also try to get visitation in place where the non-custodial parent has been wrongfully denied access to his or her children.
